Bethany Wines - Riesling Eden Valley 2008

Tasting Notes
Crafted from Riesling grapes grown predominantly in South Australia’s Eden Valley, this
wine displays the brilliant pale gold colour so typical of the area, home of many of
Australia’s greatest Rieslings. It has intense aromas of lemon/citrus with some green apple
nuances. The palate is fresh and crisp with refined varietal fruit flavours and excellent
natural acid balance. Whilst young it will team well with pan-fried white fish and is the
perfect partner to sushi. Careful cellaring will allow it to develop depth of flavour and
complexity.

Vineyard Notes
The Riesling was sourced from our Schrapel family and neighbouring vineyards in the
Eden Valley and Barossa Valley. The vines are detail hand pruned to 60 buds per vine
limiting yields to maximise flavour. The cooler Eden Valley vineyards provide the
elegant and lifted floral aromatics of lemon blossom, lime and passionfruit while the
Barossa Valley vineyards add richness and flavour.

Vintage Report
Cooling breezes fanned the vineyards during the spring and warmer summer months
allowing for a gradual, extended ripening period of the fruit. This proved to be a
significant advantage during the hot summer months of 2008 with soil moisture at
depleted levels. The vines were in excellent health leading up to harvest with
balanced canopy growth and fruit development. The grapes were picked prior to the
March heatwave, maximising fruit quality.

Winemaking Report
The grapes were picked early in the season to retain the desired clean and fresh fruit
flavour and natural acidity. The grapes were crushed and then gently pressed to
collect the free run juice. The juice is fermented to dryness under controlled
temperature conditions of 12-16 degrees for 8-12 days retaining the delicate fruit
characters of this varietal.
